Maasai Mara: Located in southwestern Kenya, the Maasai Mara is part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It borders the Serengeti National Park and offers seamless access to both regions. The Mara is easily accessible from Nairobi and a great option for those with limited time.
Serengeti: Spanning a vast area in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti is one of the most famous safari destinations globally. Known for its wide-open savannah and rich wildlife, the Serengeti requires a longer drive or flight from cities like Arusha but offers a broader, more diverse experience.
Maasai Mara: Known for its big cat population (lions, cheetahs, and leopards), the Mara offers excellent predator sightings. It’s also famous for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River in a dramatic spectacle. The Mara River crossings are a key highlight during migration, usually between July and October.
Serengeti: The Serengeti is home to the world-renowned Great Migration as well. However, the Serengeti’s migration stretches throughout the year, with herds moving between different regions of the park. It’s also an excellent location for seeing a wide range of animals, from elephants to hippos, giraffes, and buffaloes. The Serengeti also boasts a larger population of rhinos and an impressive array of bird species.
Maasai Mara: Known for its beautiful rolling hills, acacia trees, and grasslands, the Mara is more compact in size. It offers a stunning and more intimate safari experience, with diverse scenery that includes open plains, riverine forests, and bush-covered hills.
Serengeti: The Serengeti is vast, with its expansive endless plains, grassy savannahs, and occasional river systems. It’s known for its breathtaking panoramic views, and its size provides a sense of wilderness and solitude.
Maasai Mara: In addition to game drives, visitors to the Maasai Mara can enjoy hot air balloon safaris, where they can float above the plains and watch wildlife from the sky. Cultural visits to local Maasai villages can also be a part of the experience, providing insights into the culture of the Maasai people.
Serengeti: Serengeti safaris typically focus on game drives, with opportunities for walking safaris in designated areas. Additionally, it offers an incredible night safari experience where you can witness nocturnal wildlife. For those looking for a more exclusive experience, the Serengeti offers luxury tented camps.
Maasai Mara: The Maasai Mara is best visited between July and October when the Great Migration reaches the Mara River. This is the peak of the migration, and visitors can see thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the river in dramatic and often perilous scenes.
Serengeti: The Serengeti is the core of the Great Migration, and it’s spectacular year-round, though different areas of the park are favored at different times. The best time to visit for migration action is between January and March, when calving occurs in the Southern Serengeti, and then again in July to October when the herds are in the Northern Serengeti and cross into the Mara.
Maasai Mara: The Maasai Mara offers a variety of accommodation options, from luxury tented camps to more budget-friendly lodges. Many camps are located on the edge of the reserve or in private conservancies, providing a more intimate and exclusive experience.
Serengeti: Serengeti accommodation is equally diverse, with options ranging from luxury lodges and safari camps to budget options. You can even sleep under the stars in mobile camps or bush camps for a more immersive experience.

Our guide, Baraka, took us to see the flamingos, and the scenery was absolutely surreal. The red-colored waters of the lake and the backdrop of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano made for incredible photos. The accommodations were comfortable, and the food was delicious. Rioba Safaris truly exceeded our expectations with their impeccable service and well-organized itinerary! kgkjgkjg2025-02-01Verified great but for one thing We did a 9-day Southern Circuit safari to Nyerere, Mikumi, Udzungwa Mountain, and Ruaha National Parks. The parks were great, the lodging ranged from as-expected to exceptional, and our guide Ibrahim was informative and helpful and resourceful when problems arose. But problems did arise. Avoidable problems. Problems relating to the safari vehicle. It was at least 20 years old. There was a big crack in the windshield. Getting out required reaching through the open window to the outside handle because the inside ones didn't work. We wrote all that off as rusticated charm. But then the vehicle broke down on the side of a remote dirt road, and we were stuck for about an hour until Ibra could recruit an eventual passerby to help jerry-rig a solution to get us to our next stop. This happened on two separate occasions. That's unacceptable. But as long as you're not in the Land Cruiser with a license plate ending in 534, I definitely recommend the company.
