Do You Need a Visa for Tanzania?

Most travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania. However, citizens of some countries are exempt and can enter without one.

For most visitors, obtaining a tourist visa is simple and straightforward — especially with the introduction of the electronic visa (E-Visa) system.

Applying for a Tanzania E-Visa (Recommended)

The easiest and most convenient way to get your visa is by applying online through the official Tanzania Immigration system.

Important Application Tips

When filling out your E-Visa application:

Select “Holiday and Leisure” as your purpose of travel
Ensure all details match your passport exactly
Save your application number for tracking

Travel Information Section:

Choose “Hotel” as your accommodation
Use your first booked hotel or lodge details
Under “Local Host,” select Company/Organization and list your tour operator (e.g., Rioba Safaris)

Visa on Arrival (Alternative Option)

If you are unable to apply online, you can still get a visa upon arrival in Tanzania.

However, keep in mind:

You must carry cash ($50 or $100 USD)
The process may involve long queues and multiple steps
You’ll need to provide hotel and tour details

Travelers with an E-Visa can use the faster “Visa Holder” line at immigration.

Referral Visa (Special Cases)

Citizens from certain countries must apply for a referral visa in advance. This process takes longer (up to 60 days or more) and cannot be completed on arrival.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be:
