Planning a safari or holiday in Tanzania and wondering whether you need a yellow fever vaccination? The answer depends on where you are traveling from and whether you have recently transited through a country where yellow fever is present.
For most travelers arriving directly from countries that are not considered at risk for yellow fever transmission, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is not required for entry into Tanzania. However, Tanzania requires travelers arriving from yellow-fever-endemic countries to present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The same requirement applies to travelers who have spent 12 hours or more in transit through a yellow-fever-risk country.
You should check the requirement carefully if your journey begins in, or includes a long transit through, a country where yellow fever transmission occurs.
Tanzania's Ministry of Health currently lists countries in Africa and South America from which travelers are required to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The list includes countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, Brazil, Colombia and Peru, among others.
For example, if you fly directly to Tanzania from a country that is not on the yellow fever risk list, you generally will not be required to show a yellow fever certificate. However, if your itinerary includes a qualifying transit of 12 hours or more in a yellow-fever-risk country, the requirement can apply.
If you need the vaccination for your Tanzania trip, it should be administered at least 10 days before entering the country. Tanzania's Ministry of Health states that a single dose provides lifelong protection, and WHO also recognizes lifelong protection from a single appropriate yellow fever vaccination for international travel.
Make sure you receive the appropriate International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (Yellow Card) and carry it with your travel documents.
Some travelers may have medical reasons why yellow fever vaccination is not appropriate. Tanzania's Ministry of Health states that travelers with approved medical exemptions should carry appropriate medical documentation from an authorized medical officer.
Because vaccination decisions can depend on your age, medical history, pregnancy status and other individual circumstances, speak with a qualified travel-health professional before traveling.
Tanzania's Ministry of Health describes Tanzania Mainland as a low-risk country for yellow fever transmission, noting that no yellow fever virus has been isolated in the country, while also recognizing the potential risk because of ecological conditions and neighboring countries where yellow fever occurs.
This is why the entry requirement is primarily focused on travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever transmission presents a recognized risk.
Yellow fever is only one part of preparing for a Tanzania safari. Before traveling, it is sensible to discuss your itinerary with a qualified travel-health professional and ask about routine vaccinations, malaria prevention, mosquito-bite prevention, travel insurance, food and water precautions and any destination-specific health recommendations.
Your health preparation may also differ depending on whether you are visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or other parts of Tanzania.
