Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Step into the ancient wilderness of Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s most remarkable protected rainforests and one of Rwanda’s most captivating destinations for nature and primate experiences. Covering a vast expanse of pristine montane forest in southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe is a breathtaking world of towering trees, mist-covered hills, deep valleys, waterfalls, and rich biodiversity. For travelers seeking a deeper connection with nature, this extraordinary forest offers an experience unlike any traditional savannah safari.

Nyungwe is particularly famous for its chimpanzee trekking, offering visitors the chance to venture deep into the rainforest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. Hearing their calls echo through the forest before encountering them moving through the trees is an unforgettable wildlife experience. The forest is also home to numerous other primates, including colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and mangabeys, making Nyungwe an exceptional destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

One of the park’s most spectacular experiences is the Nyungwe Canopy Walk, where a suspension bridge rises high above the forest floor and provides breathtaking views across the treetops and surrounding hills. Walking above the canopy offers a completely different perspective of the rainforest and creates excellent opportunities to observe birds and wildlife while enjoying Rwanda’s dramatic scenery.

Beyond chimpanzee trekking and the canopy walk, Nyungwe offers guided forest walks, birdwatching, waterfalls, and nature experiences through one of Rwanda’s richest ecosystems. The forest is renowned for its remarkable birdlife and botanical diversity, making it a rewarding destination for travelers who enjoy photography, hiking, wildlife, and peaceful time in nature.

With Rioba Safaris, your Nyungwe adventure is thoughtfully planned around your interests and travel style. From comfortable forest accommodation and experienced local guides to chimpanzee trekking, canopy experiences, private transfers, and carefully designed itineraries, we take care of the details so you can fully enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Rwanda’s ancient rainforest.

Best Time to Visit Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park can be visited throughout the year, but the drier periods from June to September and December to February are generally more favorable for hiking, chimpanzee trekking, and exploring the forest trails. During these months, trails are often less muddy and outdoor activities can be more comfortable.

The wetter periods from March to May and October to November bring frequent rainfall and exceptionally lush forest landscapes. Although trails can become wetter and more challenging, these months offer beautiful green scenery and can be rewarding for birdwatchers and travelers who enjoy the rainforest at its most vibrant. Because Nyungwe is a rainforest, rainfall is possible at any time of year, so suitable waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended.

Whether you want to trek through the rainforest in search of chimpanzees, walk high above the ancient forest canopy, discover rare primates and birds, or combine Nyungwe with Rwanda’s gorilla trekking and savannah safari experiences, Rioba Safaris can create a personalized Rwanda adventure filled with nature, wildlife, culture, and unforgettable moments.
