Mount Meru

Mount Meru

Discover the dramatic beauty of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of East Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations. Rising to approximately 4,566 metres above sea level, Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park, surrounded by lush forests, volcanic landscapes, open grasslands, and spectacular views across northern Tanzania. Its combination of challenging trekking, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery makes it an exceptional adventure for travelers seeking something beyond a traditional safari.

The journey up Mount Meru takes you through several distinct ecological zones, beginning in the forested lower slopes and gradually moving through montane woodland, heath, and alpine landscapes. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy spectacular views of rugged volcanic cliffs and, on clear days, breathtaking panoramas toward Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain’s diverse environment creates a constantly changing landscape throughout the climb.

One of the unique features of trekking Mount Meru is the possibility of encountering wildlife along the lower sections of the route. Giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, antelopes, and numerous bird species inhabit the surrounding Arusha National Park, making the trek feel like a combination of mountain adventure and wildlife experience. Trekkers are accompanied by trained guides and, where required, park personnel to ensure a well-organized and safe journey.

Mount Meru is also an excellent preparation trek for travelers planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering an opportunity to experience high-altitude trekking while enjoying a spectacular mountain environment. It can also be combined with a northern Tanzania safari through destinations such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, creating a diverse itinerary that brings together mountains and wildlife.

With Rioba Safaris, your Mount Meru adventure is carefully planned around your fitness level, interests, travel style, and schedule. From experienced mountain guides and carefully selected accommodation to park arrangements, transfers, meals, and personalized trekking itineraries, we take care of the details so you can concentrate on enjoying the climb and the extraordinary landscapes around you.

Best Time to Visit Mount Meru

Mount Meru can be climbed throughout much of the year, but the drier periods from June to October and January to February are generally considered favorable for trekking. During these months, trails are often drier and conditions can be more comfortable, while clearer skies may provide spectacular views of Mount Meru and, on suitable days, Mount Kilimanjaro.

The wetter periods from March to May and November to December can bring more rainfall, particularly at lower elevations, making some trails muddy and slippery. However, the mountain becomes lush and beautifully green during these months, and experienced travelers may appreciate the quieter atmosphere.

Whether you are looking for a rewarding mountain challenge, preparing for a Kilimanjaro climb, seeking spectacular volcanic scenery, or hoping to combine trekking with a classic Tanzania safari, Rioba Safaris can create a personalized Mount Meru adventure filled with mountain landscapes, wildlife, nature, and unforgettable experiences.
